Open Pedagogy in GIS Education

Have a read: The next layer: Towards open pedagogy in geospatial education (Abernathy 2023). A few comments:

1. There's nothing inherently 'bad' about commerical GIS products (= Esri products) and there's nothing inherently 'better' about open-source GIS products - it's all in the way that you use them for teaching & learning.
2. GIS teaching & learning does not all of the sudden become 'active' or 'inquiry-based' or 'diverse' or 'participatory' when you use QGIS & an open-source book.
3. The vast majority of employees that hire my students use Esri products.
4. The biggest challanges for open-source GIS products: 1) there is no pratical solution for a Web GIS and 2) for GIS apps.
5. I will continue to use the Esri GIS products.

GraphSnow

GraphSnow is a nice and simple way to visualize snow depth measurements from the National Snow Analyses database.

The Traffic Simulation Game

Download and then model traffic anywhere in the world: add bike lanes, sidewalks, etc. Not sure how it all works, but somehow OpenStreetMap is involved.

Draw All Roads

Fun: city roads. Enter the name of a city and get a map of every single road in that city (based on OSM). Then: style it and download as PNG or print on a mug.

Lynching Maps

Maps Mania has compiled three maps related to this topic. Personally I find the simple dot map especially intense because it is 'just' a simple dot map: One Dot for every Lynching Victim in the US 1883-1930.

Map for Environment

Map for Environment uses OpenStreetMap and citizen activism to monitor environmental destruction 'hidden' from view, for example deforestation, road construction, etc. This is similar to the HOT Team and their mapping efforts in response to natural disasters or political crisis.
